Каратэ Ни Сентэ наси (空手に先手無し).
Этот лозунг Фунакоси Гичина знает, наверное, любой каратека.
И чаще всего лозунг переводят дословно: «В каратэ нет первой руки» и интерпретируют это как «В каратэ не нападают первым», однако это идет вразрез с логикой ведения поединка.
Мне давно интуитивно понятно, что слово «Тэ» (手) здесь означает не рука, а применительно к боевым искусствам может означать «техника» или само «каратэ».
В заметке исследователя каратэ, Мотобу Наоки представлен перевод статьи Фунакоси Гичина, где слово «Тэ» как раз имеет смысл «Искусство Каратэ».
Таким образом, в лозунге Каратэ Ни Сентэ Наси», не следует переводить Сентэ (先手) как «Первая рука» или «Первая атака», а вернее переводить как «Первым затевать драку».

«В каратэ не затевают драку первым».
А бить первым в случае, когда избежать конфликта невозможно безусловно нужно.

I have intuitively understood for a long time that the word «Te» (手) here does not mean a hand, but in relation to martial arts can mean «technique» or «karate» itself.
In a note by the Karate Researcher, Motobu Naoki, there is a translation of Funakoshi Gichin’s article, where the word «Te» just means «the art of karate».
Thus, in the slogan of Karate Ni Sente Nashi, «Sente (先手) should not be translated as «the first hand» or «the first attack», but rather translated as » the first to start a fight. «
